The European champions put up a feeble display in which they managed just one goal attempt that was on target, and were thoroughly outclassed by Switzerland. Goals either side of half-time from Freuler (37') and Vargas (46') settled matters.

The match was interrupted for 23 minutes by another of the apocalyptic thunderstorms that have been plaguing central Europe over the past several weeks and was settled by two incidents that occured after midnight local time. Three minutes after half-time Joachim Andersen had the ball in the net only for the new VAR technology to rule it out because Thomas Delany was offside by no more than a centimetre in the build up. Three minutes later the ball brushed Andersen's arm in his own goal area and VAR awarded Germany the penalty which Havertz converted. Musiala made it 2-0 15 minutes later.

After another lacklustre performance and with 4½ minutes of stoppage time played, England were trailing and on the point of booking their flight home. At that point Mark Guéhi flicked on a long throw from Walker towards Jude Bellingham, with his back to goal. He met the ball with a spectacular bicycle kick that rifled into the goal. One minute into extra-time, Harry Kane finally found his form with a clinical headed goal. England packed their defence to see out the rest of the match in a nerve-racking finale.

Once again Spain showed their quality after going behind to an own-goal scored by Le Normand in the 18th minute. Rodri equalised in the 28th minute and at half-time the game was in the balance. In the second half Spain established control and were completely dominant, scoring three times to set up a quarter-final match with Germany.

France were marginally the better side, enjoying 55% of the possession and making 17 goal attempts to Belgium's three. The fact that both sides got only two attempts on target suggests that this game could have gone either way. France left it late, scoring in the 85th minute with more than a little good fortune. Muani's scuffed short deflected off Vertonghen's thigh, wrong footing Koen Casteels in goal.

Once again Slovenia refused to be intimidated and showed the quality of their defending. As one would expect, Portugal had the lion's share of possession but remained frustrated as the match went into extra time. Towards the end of the first period, Jota dribbed into the box and was brought down in a tangle of legs by Drkušić. Ronaldo's penalty was brilliantly saved by Oblak, leaving the great man in tears. And so to penalties and now Slovenia's grit deserted them. Diogo Costa saved the first three of Slovenia's penalties so when Silva whipped his shot into the right side of the goal it was 3-0 and all over.

Once Cody Gakpo put his side ahead (20'), the Netherlands were all over their opponents and should have been further ahead at half-time. Gakpo thought he had scored in the 63rd minute but was ruled offside. Malen then scored two late goals to ensure the Dutch eased into the next round.

Merith Demiral gave Turkey the perfect start with a goal from a corner after just 57 seconds. In the 59th minute he doubled Turkey's lead, once again from a corner. Seven minutes later Austria were back in the game, Grigoritsch scoring from close range. In heavy rain, Austria besieged the Turkish defence and in the fifth minute of stoppage time Baumgartner met a corner on the edge of the six-yard box and powered the ball downward towards the goal. Diving to his right, Günok punched the ball away for a save that drew comparisons with Gordon Banks famous save from Pelé in the 1970 World Cup.

The two teams that many considered to be the best in the tournament delivered a night of tension and high drama in which 14 yellow cards and one red were shown by the referee. Dani Olmo put Spain ahead six minutes into the second half and with one minute to go they seemed bound to win. Then Kimmich brilliantly kept the ball, which was travelling towards the byline, in play with a header that found Wirtz who crashed it home from close range. With penalties looming Merino headed home in the 119th minute. Fullkrug missed the chance for another equaliser with a header from 7 metres which went narrowly wide four miutes into added time.

An absorbing if uninspiring match went the full distance with neither side looking likely to score. Ronaldo was a baleful presence, out of form and out of sorts, but he remained on the pitch despite there being better options on the bench such is his influence over the team and their coaches. In the end it all came down to a missed penalty, João Félix slamming his kick against the post. France held their nerve to win the shoot-out.

The match followed a familiar narrative with England starting brightly enough, moving the ball around and pressing the opposition when not in possession. Then, half an hour or so into the game, England sat back and stopped pressing, allowing the Swiss to get back into the game and pass the ball around at will. It came as no surprise when Embolo put Switzerland ahead in the 75th minute. Once again, a momen of brilliance put England back in the match, Saka firing in a fierce drive diagonally from outside the box into the far corner. Akanaji took Switzerland's first penalty in the shoot out which Pickford saved. The English players were full of confidence and put all their kicks away to go through to the semi-finals.

The match was a thriller with both teams going all out to score. Turkey took the lead in the 35th minute through Akaydin. De Vrij, left unmarked on the penalty sport, headed home from a corner in the 70th minute. Six minutes later the ball bobbled into Turkey' six yard box, Gakpo got in ahead of Mert Müldür who lunged only to divert the ball past his own goalkeeper.

The tournament's best attack was pitched against its strongest defence in an absorbing contest illuminated by moments of brilliance. Kolo Muani gave France an early lead, heading in a cross at the far post after moving away from his markers. In the 21st minute Lamine Yamal, just three days away from his 17th birthday, received the ball 25 metres out. He swayed to the right before checking back to his left and unleashing a curling shot that beat Maignan and flew in at the far post. Four minutes later Olmo found Navas in the French penalty area: Navas headed the ball back to Olmo who stuck out a leg to intercept, touch a second touch to control the ball before it reached the ground and lashed it towards goal where it came off Kounde and into the net.

Despite going a goal down (Simons 7') England played their best football of the tournament during the first half, pressing forward at every opportunity and exploiting the spaces in the Dutch defence and midfield. They were perhaps fortunate to be awarded a VAR penalty which Kane converted (18') but they deserved to be level. In the second half the Netherlands set out to stifle England and hit them on the break. The life went out of the game and with 90 minutes gone extra-time was a certainty but once again a moment of individual brilliance transformed the situation. Ollie Watkins, on for Kane, received the ball inside the area with his back to goal. He spun round and rifled a perfect shot into the far corner of the goal from the tightest of angles.

Although England played well the truth of the matter is that Spain were better. In the goalless first half England were on the attack for extended periods but we have seen before that Spain could absorb pressure and come back strongly. Williams put them ahead immediately after the break but Palmer, on for Kane who was once again out of sorts, equalised with a precisely aimed drive from outside the box. In the closing minutes Spain pressed England back in defence and Oyazabal scored their later winner, slotting the ball past Pickford from close range.
